Perfect Lemonade


If you haven’t spent an afternoon sipping fresh-squeezed lemonade yet this summer, may I gently and lovingly suggest you do so? It’s a truly wonderful way to enjoy the warm weather. Lemonade plus a good book and a comfy chair on the porch. So nice.

I’ve made lemonade a few different times, and have a perfect recipe. The magic ratio for lemonade is 1 cup of sugar to 1 cup of lemon juice. And the key step in great lemonade is making a simple syrup (sugar dissolved in boiling water). Without that step, you end up with sugar that sinks to the bottom of the pitcher. My favorite way to enjoy the lemonade is blended with crushed ice.

Perfect Lemonade

1 cup white sugar
1 cup fresh squeezed lemon juice (about 4-6 lemons)
4-5 cups water


In a small saucepan, combine the sugar and 1 cup of water. Over medium-high heat, bring to a boil stir until sugar is dissolved. Allow to cool to room temperature, and chill in refrigerator. In a pitcher, stir together chilled syrup, lemon juice and remaining water. Serve with ice, sliced lemons, or blended with crushed ice. Makes 6 servings.
